National Grid proposed price hike could raise utility bills by $300 yearly

NEW YORK (PIX11) – Some New Yorkers could soon be paying much more for gas service.

A proposed price hike could increase monthly bills by 30% starting at the beginning of April.  

In 2023, the National Grid Group filed a request for new gas rates with the New York State Public Service Commission. Some customers could see an increase of $30 more a month for the average bill, bringing the yearly cost to over $300 more per year for the average New York City household. 

Some city officials say they want to block the price hike proposed by the National Grid Group. 

The electricity and gas provider states they need the money to comply with climate and safety laws.   

A group of lawmakers was expected to join environmental activists from the No North Brooklyn Pipeline Alliance and Sane Energy Project Thursday evening to speak about National Grid’s proposed rate increase to pay for upgrades to the Greenpoint Energy Center.  

“The only thing worse than living near an aging fossil gas plant is being forced to pay for its expansion,” said Assemblymember Emily Gallagher. “In the age of increasing climate catastrophes and crushing utility bills, it’s past time to retire this facility and chart a new, cleaner, and greener direction for North Brooklyn.” 

If the price hike is approved, National Grid’s proposal of $3.8 billion for gas infrastructure would increase the average residential bill for households in Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and Long Island.
