Book Club 2024

Join the VASEN Book Club!

Last year VASEN kicked of 2023 by reading Jessica Gordon Nembhard’s book Collective Courage. This gave us a deeper knowledge about the history of Black cooperative movements and spurred efforts to strengthen the worker cooperative ecosystem in Virginia.

We are excited to announce that 2024 we are planning a year long series of readings. This will start with Robin Wall Kimmerer’s Braiding Sweetgrass.

The book is a deep dive into the tensions and opportunities between indigenous and scientific thinking. Our goal in reading the book is to think about how we can strengthen our solidarity with indigenous communities in Virginia and consider how indigenous culture is at the heart of the solidarity economy we are trying to build in Virginia.

Meetings take place on the First Sunday of the month at 2pm.

This is a slow reading of this book, which means there is alway opportunity to catch up. Plus, we are really focusing on how this book frames our present experiences. Conversations start with the book but move into other topics and ways of being in the world.
