In almost every locality in Virginia, the minimum wage does not meet the living wage threshold, and in many localities, it is woefully inadequate.
Living wages are defined as the actual wage needed for people in a locality, city, or county to live on. Living wages consider necessary living costs such as housing, food, child care, medical, and transportation expenses as a part of the wage calculation.
On July 30, Virginia Living Wage chapters will be hosting our second round of Summer Canvass Days encouraging local businesses to join the Living Wage program.
Help us encourage employers to do their part in making Virginia a more just place for working people and families. Living Wage Summer Canvass Day volunteers will take a couple hours to distribute literature and talk with local employers about the Living Wage Certification program and invite them to become certified. All materials will be provided. We especially encourage folks to join with a group or bring a friend. Join one of our four teams in Richmond, Charlottesville, Harrisonburg-Rockingham, or Northern Virginia, or convene a new team to participate in the work Statewide.
