Have you ever felt burned out and discouraged from organizing? Have felt alone or totally dominated by an overpowering feeling? Join us at the Meditation and Emotional Balance for Organizers Series and learn tools to reconnect with your intentions!
Political organizing presents a lot of challenges in current times, with increasing life demands, competition for attention, resorting to distractions to deal with pressure. Through this Series we will see and practice techniques to strengthen our inner resources when going through difficult emotions, as well as trust and lean on our comrades to share and navigate through what comes.
The Series starts at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, July 12th, and will guide DSA and other organizers through ways to find emotional balance in the midst of work, life, and organizing responsibilities. Training Department Steward and certified meditation coach Elise R will guide participants through ways to manage emotionally in the midst of difficult conversations and find ways to make meditation practices integrate into top of organizing work and daily life. The initial segment will feature trainings on emotional regulation and meditation, along with group discussion - then the Series will feature practice and group meditation ongoing over the following 8 weeks. Sign up for either the single segment or the full series at the form here!
The Meditation and Emotions for Organizers Series is designed for organizers in and around DSA and for anyone trying to find ways to manage emotions and their involvement in making the world a better place. This is the first item put on by the Training Department, which has the responsibility of designing trainings for the Chapter and assisting its priority campaigns and formations with necessary trainings.
This series is based on the Cultivating Emotional Balance (CEB) Program.
What is CEB?
The short answer: CEB is a series of tools and frameworks that are meant to help people develop better coping and resilience though mediation and emotional skills. The ultimate goal of CEB is the cultivation of attentional, cognitive, conation (or intention/choice), and emotional balance. Research has shown that the skills and outcomes of CEB have a variety of benefits, including increased emotional awareness in one's self and others, a decrease in depressive, anxious and hostile states, less emotional reactivity to stressful events, increased pro-social behavior, and ultimately increased genuine happiness and satisfaction.
Key components of the CEB program include:
- Understanding each emotion from the inside out, from inside the body to speech and action
- Recognizing and working with emotional triggers and responses
- Identifying our emotion-fueled perceptions and how they may distort the way we see the world and lead us to respond with reactivity
- Deepening awareness and stabilizing attention through meditation
- Increasing compassion for self and others
- Cultivating clear values and ethics that foster mental balance
You can read more of the history of CEB
here (and we will also cover it within the course itself).
