Honoring those doing the work to strengthen our union

Sisters and Brothers,

Union density, the proportion of workers in unions in the labor force, has been on a long-term downward trend since the 1940’s. Much work remains to be done to reverse this decline, both in CSEA and in the union movement as a whole. As part of CSEA’s efforts to buck this trend and stay strong, the union has created two awards to honor those members doing the hard work of growing CSEA’s membership. CSEA is seeking entries for the Nadra Floyd Award and the Membership Achievement Award.

One of the most critical challenges facing unions today is the struggle to organize new members. If unions are going to be successful in this challenge, we must follow a comprehensive strategy for union building. With this in mind, the Nadra Floyd Award is an annual external organizing award to honor CSEA members who make an extraordinary contribution to a campaign to organize a new bargaining unit or group of workers into CSEA.

The Membership Achievement Award honors a CSEA member, group of members, committee, unit or local that has strengthened the union by signing up new members. Fostering solidarity and building bargaining power should be on-going activities for union leaders and activists.

Nominee for both Awards should exhibit some of the following:

  • Providing leadership, inspiration, and support to workers or members.
  • In-person, on the ground action and involvement in organizing or union building campaigns.
  • Signing up workers on union authorization cards as part of an organizing campaign.
  • Participating in strategy meetings with workers and organizers.
  • Mobilizing membership for internal or external organizing activities.

If you know a CSEA member, committee, unit or local that has worked to grow CSEA’s membership, whether through internal or external organizing, we encourage you to fill out one or both attached nomination forms. If you have any concerns regarding these awards, please contact the CSEA Membership Committee, c/o the CSEA Organizing Department at 518-257-1400.

In Solidarity,

Mary E. Sullivan, President Guadalupe Johnson, Chair, Membership Committee
