Trump must not be let back on Facebook

Trump just announced that he is running for president again. We don't have to remind you that this is bad news, but it gets worse.

A leaked document from Facebook revealed that the company's fact checkers were instructed NOT to fact-check Trump once he announced his campaign.

In the last days of his presidency, Trump used social media to spread lies claiming the election was a fraud and incite a violent attack on the U.S. Capitol and members of Congress. He was banned from Facebook and Instagram for inciting violence and insurrection. Now Facebook is considering letting him back on the platform AND isn't planning to fact-check anything he says!

It should be obvious that someone whose lies about election fraud on social media incited a violent insurrection that killed several people should absolutely require fact-checking.

    Why is this important?

Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, claims that political candidates should be exempt from the rules everyone else has to follow.

But really, Meta and other social media platforms are motivated by how their bottom lines swell when they profit off of hate, misogyny, racism, and disinformation.

That means that Facebook and Instagram can use this loophole to exempt Trump from rules everyone else has to follow. It means they could let him back on the platform after banning him and that they are already planning to exempt him from fact-checking. We can't let Facebook get away with this.

It doesn’t take an expert to know that Donald Trump has continued to use his public appearances to spread disinformation about elections and threats of violence, and he'd continue doing the same thing on sites like Facebook.

Add your name to the petition now if you agree that Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, should not exempt Donald Trump from rules like fact-checking under any circumstances.
