Why am I running for ANC Commissioner?

I am running in the November 8, 2022 General Election to be the Commissioner for ANC 6C01 because I am passionate and committed to advocating for our neighborhood. I have been serving as an appointed citizen member of ANC 6C’s Transportation and Public Space Committee since 2017 and chaired the Committee for two years during the pandemic.

This experience has given a deeper appreciation and understanding for ANCs and their roles to weigh in on proposed projects and legislation that affect our neighborhood, in addition to submitting testimony to the Council on the performance and budget oversight of District agencies.

I believe in:

  • Safer streets
  • Resilient community spaces
  • Accountable and responsive District agencies
  • DC statehood

About ANC 6C01

An Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) is a non-partisan, neighborhood body made up locally elected representatives called Advisory Neighborhood Commissioners. They are a unique feature of the District’s Home Rule Charter. An ANC’s main job is to represent the neighborhood in advising the District government on things that affect our neighborhood. District agencies are required to give “great weight” to an ANC’s recommendations.

The District’s ward and ANC boundaries were recently redrawn and will take effect starting in 2023. ANC 6C includes parts of the Near Northeast and Capitol Hill neighborhoods and will include a total of seven Commissioners in 2023.

The new ANC 6C01 boundaries are from Florida Ave NE to H Street NE, and roughly from 4th Street NE to 7th Street NE. Visit www.OpenANC.org to view interactive maps to toggle back and forth on the current and future boundaries.

About Christy

I first moved to the region over 13 years ago after completing my graduate degree in Philadelphia, PA. I have worked professionally as a city planner on a number of issues, including transportation, land conservation, and healthy food access. I volunteer with DC Families for Safe Streets, a group comprised of survivors and family members who have lost loved ones to traffic violence; and as a Team Lead with Casey Trees to plant trees throughout the District. I use she/her pronouns.

I live with my husband, teen, and our rescue cat, Mr. T. As a family, we have been watching the TV show “Lost” and finally reached the last season. (We are also looking for tv recs!) My teen is a huge fan of the pizza from Old City Market and Oven.

I’m always happy to talk and connect neighbors to available resources. Please email me at Kwan4DC@gmail.com.
