There were cries for improved working conditions in Southwest, D.C. on May 24.

"When workers' rights are under attack what do we do? Stand up fight back!" the protestors shouted.

Former cooks, servers and runners of the recently closed Moon Rabbit restaurant demonstrated in support of a union contract, higher wages and healthcare benefits.

They chanted and held up signs for two hours outside their former workplace which closed its doors on May 22.

"I’m honestly devastated. We have co-workers with family to feed and at this point, they don’t have any hours to work or any way to make money," said Michael Cruz who was employed as a server at Moon Rabbit.

About 60 workers were affected by the restaurant's closure.

They tell 7News they’re working with Local 25 to form a union and believe that decision influenced Moon Rabbit's closure.

Managers inside the hotel where the restaurant was located would not give 7News a comment, but their corporate office said the separation was not related to efforts to unionize.

The workers plan to return to the same location on May 25 at 7 a.m. for another protest.
