Paul LePage has put Maine into the national headlines again, for all the wrong reasons. The national media picked up on his threat to “deck” a Democratic Party staffer, who was filming an event, on Aug. 14. An article last week on HuffingtonPost.com about the incident reminded readers that LePage was once dubbed “America’s Craziest Governor.” (As if we needed reminding.)

This came after the Press Herald published a Sun Journal article Aug. 18 (“LePage questions integrity of voting in Maine’s larger communities,” Page B4), informing us that LePage is taking a page from the Republican Party playbook to erode confidence in Maine’s election system. (Of course, the state’s elections are among the cleanest, most transparent in the country.)

I suggest that LePage return to Florida, where Gov. Ron DeSantis is running a state strictly by that Republican playbook with a few of his own dark twists. Maine has survived a pandemic and more under Janet Mills’ steady hand without the violent, cruel rhetoric and policies of Paul LePage. And yet, he feels entitled to a third term as governor.

The state is so over Paul LePage. We’ve moved on. It’s time he did, too.
