Sir Keir Starmer has said that Labour would cut monthly student loan repayments for graduates in the first indication of his plans for university finance since dropping his pledge to scrap tuition fees, The Times can reveal.

A future Labour government “could reduce the monthly repayments for every single graduate without adding a penny to government borrowing or general taxation”, Starmer’s education spokeswoman said.

Writing for The Times Red Box, Bridget Phillipson, the shadow education secretary, promised that Labour would reform the tuition fee system without increasing government spending.
