President Biden has ruled out sending F-16s to Ukraine to help in the fight against Russia, despite repeated pleas from Kyiv to provide the warplanes.

In an interview with ABC News to mark the first anniversary of the conflict, Biden also lambasted China, saying that its mooted peace plan was irrational.

Biden said that the US would not be sending the fighters “for now”. Asked whether he was saying that the US would never provide the F-16s, the president said that the US military considered the fighter jets unnecessary at present.

Why everyone wants the F-16

“There is no basis upon which there is a rationale, according to our military now, to provide F-16s,” Biden said. “I am ruling it out for now.”
