Why I opposed a development in Wigan — and why Labour’s housing plans will save other communities

Politics is about choices. For too long, our country has been held back by leaders who put sticking plasters on Britain’s wounds rather than taking the decisions they know we need to heal them. Labour choose different.

This lack of courage is the root cause of so many of the problems facing modern Britain: stagnant growth, low productivity and an acute housing crisis.

There is a generation growing up locked out of home ownership and with it the assets that sustain and protect them through tough times and good. This divide — between those who hold assets and those who don’t — is fragmenting our country. But it doesn’t have to be this way.

In every part of Britain people have ambition for themselves, their
