A group of MPs have called on the government to clarify how much energy small nuclear power plants will contribute and what the cost of rolling out the technology will be to taxpayers.

In a letter to Claire Coutinho, the energy secretary, the Commons’ environmental audit committee urged the government to ensure that plans for small modular reactors were scrutinised sufficiently by parliament and by the National Audit Office to confirm that the power generators offered value for money.

Philip Dunne, chairman of the environmental audit committee, said that despite “pledging hundreds of millions of pounds in support for [small modular reactor] projects”, the government’s “overall vision for the sector at this stage lacks clarity”.
