Russia has dismissed reports that it plans to put a nuclear missile into space, calling the claim a “malicious fabrication” by the White House to persuade Congress to approve military aid for Ukraine.

The US has told Congress and European allies that Russia is developing a space-based nuclear weapon designed to destroy western satellite networks. Leading members of Congress briefed on the intelligence reports have called it a “serious national security threat”.

If deployed into orbit, the weapon could wreck satellite communications, GPS, space surveillance and military command operations by the US and its allies, The New York Times reported, citing officials briefed on the intelligence. The US has no ability at present to defend its satellites from such a weapon, officials said.
