An Israeli government minister has been suspended after claiming the use of nuclear weapons in Gaza was a “possibility”.

Amihai Eliyahu, the heritage minister, made the comment in an interview with Radio Kol Barama.

Asked whether an atomic bomb should be dropped on the strip, he replied: “This is one of the possibilities.”

That brought a swift backlash and he was suspended by Binyamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, who released a statement saying the minister’s comments were “disconnected from reality”.

He added: “Israel and the IDF act according to the highest standards of international law in order to prevent harm to non-involved people, and we will continue to do so until victory.”
