The recycling and repurposing of nuclear waste as fuel for reactors could enable the generation of more than 2,000 years of zero-carbon electricity for the UK, according to a report by an environmental campaign group.

RePlanet said spent nuclear fuel could be used in advanced reactors to create 1,300 to 2,300 years of power using existing reserves. Rather than the waste being buried, it is calling for it to be used to generate clean energy.

Mark Lynas, co-founder of RePlanet and one of the authors of the report, said nuclear waste “needs to be recycled efficiently in order to generate centuries of clean power for the UK and Europe”, adding: “This material is not waste, it is fuel for the future.”
