MEMBERS of the Grassington and District Peace group held a vigil in Grassington Town Square on Sunday to remember the nuclear destruction of the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki over two days in August 1945.
It was held as part of international Hiroshima and Nagasaki memorial day. Richard Hargreaves, of the peace group, said: "Members stood in silence for 15 minutes before sharing their thoughts between themselves and passers-by. With so many countries now possessing or developing nuclear weapons the threat of nuclear warfare is still with us."
A coffee morning in Grassington organised by the group on Saturday July 29 raised £500. The money has been sent to the charity Afghanaid for its work in helping women and girls in Afghanistan who right across the whole country are being denied education by the Taliban regime.
