COSHOCTON COUNTY

When do three wrongs make a right?

The two most recent presidents of the United States are currently subject to special investigation for possession of classified government documents in violation of U.S. law. For more than six years, both Trump and Biden have chosen to pursue the extradition of Julian Assange from Great Britain for possession of classified documents in violation of U.S. law. (Please feel free to insert your favorite ironic emoji here.)

Those incapable of recognizing the hypocrisy of seeking to imprison a non-citizen journalist shielded by the same First Amendment protections afforded to all members of the free press, merely serve to provide further proof of the extent to which our public educational system has been rendered totally ineffective, as if more evidence was actually required.

Revelations of criminal activity attributable to the U.S. Government (regardless of which party is in power), should never be wielded as justification for infringing upon the time-honored legal protections afforded to public interest whistleblowers seeking to inform the populace. Rather, it is the collective ambivalence of a citizenry now loath to decry the persecution of Julian Assange for more than a decade, that presents a threat to the future of a most fragile democracy already subjected to existential attacks from within.
