Who wants cosy, low-stakes TV to ease into 2024 when there is this jaw-dropping reality check on the world being on the verge of a nuclear apocalypse? Journalist Jane Corbin speaks to the scientists, investigators and diplomats who set the Doomsday Clock – which, already minutes away from midnight (read: a global catastrophe), is due to be updated on 23 January. It is not just crime-solving this week as the village is rocked by a serious accident when Will (Tom Brittney) heads out on the motorbike he promised his pregnant wife Bonnie (Charlotte Ritchie) he wouldn’t ride. As Geordie investigates what happened and finds a body near the scene, the case becomes more complicated. Hannah Verdier

Having survived a murder attempt by naughty miss Babs, our antique-dealing heroine Jean White (Sally Lindsay) returns to solve all manner of mysteries in the picturesque little French village of Sainte Victoire. This week: an innocent bystander is gunned down at a bus stop. Ali Catterall

Postponing their return to the US, Julia and Paul (David Hyde Pierce) head to Paris for a romantic weekend – until old friend Avis (Bebe Neuwirth) turns up, also avoiding real life. Cue an itinerary of comedy gold and a boozy night with Jean-Paul Sartre. HR
