Lead Organizer

The Lead Organizer is responsible for driving the field work of a large-scale strategic non-union organizing campaign in one of 32BJ’s core industries. S/He supervises a team of organizers, and reports to an Organizing Coordinator or Deputy Organizing Director. Lead Organizers also participate in senior staff meetings and planning sessions and union-wide trainings. The Lead Organizer performs a range of duties, which may vary according to the needs of the overall program.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervise and mentor Organizers on organizing fundamentals, including house visits, identifying worksite leaders, committee development, planning and running actions, and other skills;
  • Mentor trainees, including member organizing brigades and organizers in our New Organizer Training Program (NOTPs);
  • Drive own work in the field as well as team’s through monthly planning;
  • Lead actions including pickets and rallies, and train staff to do the same;
  • Assure the accuracy of lists, records, databases and wall charts related to representation and campaign assignments;
  • Work with staff across departments and districts to develop and drive program; articulate a positive vision of the campaign and of the union;
  • Work within the framework and processes of the organization to resolve internal disputes and issues

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • An in-depth understanding of non-union worker organizing; three to five years of organizing experience required, including experience supervising a team of staff organizers;
  • The ability and willingness to travel, and to work long hours, including evenings and weekends as the campaign requires;
  • Strong and effective verbal communication and presentation skills, both with team they are leading and ability to clearly and succinctly get campaign information to other department staff who support the organizing campaign;
  • Advanced writing and computer skills;
  • Strong interpersonal skills; experience and ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds, including union staff at all levels;
  • A car and a valid driver’s license are required;
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • This position is a full time position that occasionally requires long and irregular hours, including some nights, weekends and holidays
  • This position requires travel to worksites
  • Valid driver’s license and car with insurance required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to ascend and descend stairs, walk through large work sites, and participate in marches and demonstrations that can be at least three to four hours in duration.
  • Some overnight travel to other East Coast locations may be required.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:
The salary for candidates qualified to be hired as Lead Organizer is $90,456. 32BJ offers a generous benefits package that includes a fully employer-paid medical, dental and vision plan (for full-time employees and their qualified dependents) and retirement benefits, including a defined benefit pension plan and 401K. 32BJ offers paid time off including three weeks’ vacation, eleven holidays, twelve sick days and, after the first year of service, four personal days. The union currently offers a remote work policy of one remote day per week at the discretion of the manager.
