A CALL has been made for nuclear weapons to stop being made at the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) in Aldermaston.

Aldermaston Women's Peace Camp joined AWE staff strikers on Wednesday, January 24 outside the establishment with a clear message of it's own, to support the decommission of Trident.

Trident, also known as the Trident nuclear programme, covers the development, procurement and operation of nuclear weapons in the United Kingdom and their means of delivery.

The workers at the establishment had launched a 24-hour strike in a dispute over pay.

Di McDonald from the Aldermaston Women's Peace Camp said that warheads, an explosive nuclear device, are currently being made at the AWE site.

McDonald has been a member of the group since 1990 and attended the strike. She said the group want the devices at the site to be taken apart and stop being made.

She said if something goes wrong when the devices are transported it can cause colossal and devastating damage if something goes wrong.

"If there is an accident while the warheads are being transported it would be terrible."

A government spokesperson added: “The UK is committed to the long-term goal of a world without nuclear weapons, in line with our obligations under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).

"We firmly believe the best way to achieve this is through gradual multilateral disarmament negotiated through the NPT.”
