CND announces citizens weapons check for US nuclear weapons at RAF Lakenheath

CAMPAIGNERS have announced a citizens’ weapons check at RAF Lakenheath amid fears the US will base nuclear weapons there.

The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) urged the government to refuse the US any permission to base nuclear weapons in Britain again.

Experts have warned US Air Force plans to build a “surety dormitory” at the base in Suffolk implied a return of nuclear arms.

CND’s chairman Tom Unterrainer and vice-chair Sophie Bolt have now written to the base’s commander General Campo saying they intend to carry out a citizens’ weapons inspection on Saturday September 23.

This typically involves activists asking to gain entry to a site to look for signs of nuclear weapons’ presence, such as high radiation levels.

Their letter stated: “British citizens deserve to know the truth of the matter, not least because stationing US nuclear weapons at Lakenheath makes the base, the surrounding area — and indeed the whole country — a target for a nuclear attack.”
