Hundreds of Sellafield cleaners vote to strike in anger at a broken pay promise

HUNDREDS of outsourced cleaners at the Sellafield nuclear plant have voted to strike over “broken pay promises,” their union GMB announced today.

Over three hundred workers, employed by contractor Mitie, do a “back-breaking, often dirty job” keeping nuclear decommissioning facilities at the Cumbria site clean, the union said.

But bosses have gone back on their word to introduce a cost-of-living wage boost from November and will not now raise salaries until April — six months late, GMB charged.

The union confirmed that staff and reps will meet in the coming days to discuss potential walkout dates.

“These workers are rightly furious after broken promises from bosses,” GMB organiser Oli Slack said.

“Mitie promised them a pay rise in November and they should stick to it. GMB is ready to get back round the table to avert this industrial action.”

A Mitie spokesperson said: “We’re disappointed that some GMB members have voted to take industrial action, given the significant pay increase that has been offered. In addition to this pay uplift, we recently announced a £10m winter support package designed to help the lowest paid colleagues across Mitie with the rising cost of living.

“We would welcome continued engagement with GMB to reach a resolution. As always, our priority is to ensure that services are delivered and there is no disruption should strike action occur.”
