Twelve workers at the Staples store in Brunswick have filed a petition to form a union with the National Labor Relations Board. One Brunswick Staples employee, who declined to be identified fearing retribution, told the Times Record that the workers are organizing to boost worker wages, which range from $15 to $18 an hour

“McDonald’s is starting at $18.50. Walmart is starting at $19,” the worker told the Times Record. “I could go down the street to Five Guys and get a $2 (an hour) raise.”

The unnamed worker also said only non-managerial supervisors and are “insanely expensive.” The worker added that while they are considered a full-time employee, they and other workers are often denied requests to work 40 hours a week

“I need 40 hours to survive,” the worker said.

In their letter to management, the workers listed several complaints including lack of livable wages, benefits, predictable schedules, staffing and sufficient hours for employees. The workers also say the store reneged on its promises of pay raises and that managers have not supported them.

When asked why they chose to stay at Staples when other jobs in the area pay better, the worker said they they appreciate their fellow employees and helping small businesses that rely on Staples for supplies, marketing materials and more.

“The whole team is loyal to each other. We care about each other,” the worker told the Times Record. “I love my job. I help people out every single day. …”

The worker told the Times Record they hope the employees’ efforts inspire workers at other Staples stores to unionize. Staples has nearly a thousand retail stores in the US, including 10 in Maine.
