Eerie pictures show a deserted Chernobyl frozen in time since the population abandoned the city after the 1986 nuclear disaster.

Following the power plant’s horrific meltdown, the area has been reclaimed by nature. While a lack of human activity has meant structures have decayed over the subsequent four decades, thanks to avid urban exploring photographer Matthew Christopher of Abandoned America, we are able to bring a selection of snaps.

Taken within the radiation zone, where most would otherwise fear to tread, Matthew's passion for abandoned sites saw him brave the city and take some stunning photographs. Matthew has travelled the length and breadth of the US to photograph abandoned buildings, but he has also made several trips abroad to expand the collection.

There's lots of quality news coming out of the US.

In this instance, he visited Chernobyl, Pripyat, and the surrounding areas in Ukraine to capture the spookily surreal exclusion zone.

Matthew has a regular podcast, where he tells the story of the ruins he visits, including one about Chernobyl and Pripyat.
