Latvia’s foreign minister has become the latest senior European politician to back President Macron’s call to refuse to rule out sending Nato troops to Ukraine.

Krisjanis Karins made the comments as Macron indicated that French armed forces were working on contingency plans for deployment in Ukraine in the event of western military intervention.

Although the US, UK and Germany reacted frostily to Macron’s call to keep the option open last month, the Élysée said that eastern European capitals have swung behind him.

Underlining the shift, Karins, a former Latvian prime minister, praised the French president, whose newly hawkish stance is in stark contrast to his attempts to negotiate with President Putin at the start of the war.

Karins said Macron was “encouraging allies to think
