Matthew Syed is smack on the button in his assessment of the hypocritical whining of European governments, which comes whenever America expresses exasperation over their failure to meet commitments on defence spending (“The storm is gathering, and Europe is still dithering on defending itself”, Comment, last week).

Europe has stripped its armed forces of the means to fight a serious conventional opponent; spent that money on winning domestic votes; expected the US to carry the load; and then criticised that country for any operational failures. Donald Trump may be a loathsome narcissist, but if the US leaves us to our fate after the war in Ukraine is over, we have only ourselves to blame.
