Support Immigrant Workers Impacted by the Los Angeles Fires
Our hearts are with everyone displaced by the fires across greater Los Angeles. From the first days since the disaster began, the National Day Laborer Organizing Network (NDLON) has been helping survivors to find safety, stability and comfort.
Our Pasadena Community Job Center, at 500 N. Lake Avenue, is serving as a relief hub for Pasadena and Altadena, providing temporary shelter, food, water, and emergency kits. Every morning, truck crews from our Volunteer Fire Relief Brigade head out to clear fallen trees and debris from streets and sidewalks. Volunteers load up cars with water, food, diapers, clothing and other necessities. The need is great – liines can be long and people are tired and stressed. But kindness is everywhere.
But we need your help. We have had a flood of donations but the flow is uneven – some supplies we have a lot of, but other things we always urgently need.
Immigrants, especially undocumented day laborers, are the reliable and essential second responders who step up for the difficult, dangerous work of disaster recovery. But they are also exposed to the risk of arrest and deportation. Just as the fires hit, we learned of immigration raids in Kern County, with agents pulling over drivers and arresting immigrants door-to-door. We fear this is only a taste of what is to come.
Immigrant workers and families in California are now summoning their courage, strength and resiliency to endure these hard times. Won’t you help them by contributing financial support? We know that with your help, we will get through this together.
Solo el pueblo salva al pueblo. Only the people save the people.
