Tell Governor Kemp to Veto HB 1105

On March 28, 2024, at around 11 pm, the Georgia House of Representatives Passed HB 1105 with 99 votes in favor versus 75 votes against it.

HB 1105 will now head to Governor Kemp’s desk to be signed into law. He has 40 days to take this action. If he decides to sign it, it will become effective immediately, except for one section that will become effective in December of 2024.

HB 1105 is a draconian bill rooted in anti-immigrant sentiment that would mandate local law enforcement to comply with failed policies and programs like 287(g) and error-prone ICE detainers that will cost counties millions of dollars. HB 1105 in no way promotes public safety.

Instead, HB 1105 will increase racial profiling of our communities and counter the choice of voters who ended the 287(g) program in Cobb and Gwinnett during the 2020 elections due to the harm caused to the economy and the safety of community members, especially our youth. It will also require those who are subject to an immigration ICE detainer to provide a DNA sample if they have been convicted of a felony, which violates our constitutional right to privacy.
