In the spirit of camaraderie and culinary excellence, the Chili Cook-Off Fundraiser invites participants and attendees alike to savor a diverse array of tantalizing chili recipes crafted by talented cooks from across the community. Whether you're a seasoned chili aficionado or simply looking to support a worthy cause, this event promises a delightful day filled with warmth, flavor, and the opportunity to make a meaningful difference.
WHEN: April 28, noon to 3 pm
WHERE: Carrboro Town Commons
Featuring: Music, a Bake Sale, Beer by Steel String Brewery
Rules: Registration is non-refundable and non-transferrable. $35 for pro division and $25 for amateur.
Pro division is for the chef who gets paid to prepare food for others including restaurants, camps, universities, corporate kitchens, etc. Amateur division is for the talented home cook.
Entry deadline: Friday, April 19, 5 pm
ALL CONTESTANTS should prepare a minimum of: 5 gallons for pro division and 3 gallons for amateur. (Contestants can make more, if they wish) Contestants not preparing the minimum amounts will be disqualified from the competition.
Public tasters will receive 2 oz of chili from each table they visit. A spectator must present a tasting ticket to receive a two (2) ounce taste of your chili.Taste Tickets are required even after ticket buckets are turned in. No Chili Giveaways, please.
Each contestant will provide 3 oz to each on the invited Judging Panel. It will be the team’s responsibility to fill the judging cup and deliver the chili to the judging area at the allotted judging time of 2pm for a blind tasting.
Contestants are encouraged, not required, to name their chili and decorate their cooking area to reflect that name. This chili cook-off is for cooks who want to have fun and be recognized for their superb culinary skills. Dress up, wear a costume, have fun!
Chili must be homemade (need not be an original recipe).
All food will be prepared ahead of the event. It must be kept warm at the event.
Contestants Must Supply: Chili in Crockpot or other warming dish, a serving ladle, tablecloth, plastic serving gloves. We will have heavy duty extension cords but, to help out, bring one if you have one (labeled with your name).
OCLW will provide: tables, electrical access, heavy duty extension cords, sampling bowls & spoons, napkins, voting box
Invited Judging Panel: Chili tastings are blind and are judged on a point basis for 1) Visual Presentation 2) Aroma, 3) Texture, 4) Taste, 5) Spice Level. People's Choice: Each paid entrant will receive 3 Voting Coins. Each contestants table will hold a voting box. Entrants place their coins in their 3 favorite contestants boxes.
Winners will be announced at 2:30 pm. One People's Choice Award will be announced (a combo of Pro and Amateur Divisions). Plus, one Judged Pro Winner will be announced, and one Judged Amateur Winner will be announced.
