Since time eternal, Native peoples, especially the San Carlos Apache people, have held ceremonies at Oak Flat – cleansing themselves in the perennial springs, collecting sacred foods, praying, and connecting with the Creator. Handing over this Native land to Rio Tinto Resolution Copper Mining would destroy the entire area, deplete and poison already limited water supplies, and forever destroy the culture and traditional practices of Indigenous peoples -- all for corporate profit to export copper to other countries.
It would also go directly against promises to honor Nation-to-Nation relationships and to meaningfully consult with Tribes.
The Native Organizing Alliance Action Fund builds Native political power across Indian Country, fighting for policy to mandate Tribal consultation on infrastructure projects that will affect Native communities, and fighting back against attempts to roll back foundational environmental laws and regulations that safeguard Native communities.
